Many homeowners have found vinyl siding to be a low-cost option when it comes to siding. Vinyl has gained increased popularity through the years due to its durability and sustainability. It can add beauty to the outside of your home and requires minimal maintenance. But even the best vinyl siding can be made better if it’s used in conjunction with siding insulation.

Benefits of Siding Insulation

About 25% of the exterior of the average home is made of wall studs. These can account for a significant amount of energy loss because they are poor insulators. Like a blanket, siding insulation protects the home from this thermal bridging by covering the entire exterior wall surface with continuous insulation. This helps homes stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Common Types of Vinyl Siding Insulation

The most common insulation used for vinyl siding is rigid foam. There are three main types of rigid foam insulation, expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), and polyisocyanurate. Each varies in R-value, permeability of water vapor (allowing liquid to pass through), cost, and water resistance.

Another option is the profile matching backer board. It is specifically designed for the most common vinyl siding profiles. It fills in all the hollow voids behind the vinyl siding, adding additional strength and durability. Additionally, insulated vinyl siding is also available. This siding has the profile matching backer board already fused to it. Insulated vinyl siding decreases installation time because both the siding and insulation are hung at the same time.

Going Forward

Whichever insulation you use, make sure you seal all seams with tape and caulk all penetration areas to seal any possible air leaks. You may need a vapor barrier under the insulation as well. Some rigid foam insulation have been approved as water vapor barriers and can do double duty in this regard. Check building codes for your area to ensure proper installation.
